The movie 10.5, named after an earthquake of magnitude 10.5 on the Richter Scale is also set near Los Angeles. It's hard to know where to start with this movie, as almost every scene is scientifically inaccurate and misleading. The premise for such a large earthquake in the movie is that the earthquake originates (hypocenter) is located 700 km into Earth, in the 'sub-asthenosphere.' At these depths rock does not fracture and break as it does on the surface, it deforms with pressure, meaning the rock would not 'break' causing an earthquake, it would simply deform and stretch. The movie then moves on to nonsensical made up terms like 'lateral-skip', took surface soil samples to 'prove' the depth of the fault (face-palm), and looks to fuse together the San Andreas Fault using nuclear warheads.
